Research and Development

Research & Development has been pivotal in the development of Indian Herbs.

Continuous high level research helped in developing many unique products particularly in those segments where modern system of medicine does not provide satisfactory solutions and similarly not much has been offered, so far, by alternative systems of medicine. More than 192 scientists have been awarded higher degrees (post-graduate or doctorate) for outstanding research studies on these herbal products and more than 750 research papers have been published on these products in eminent national and international scientific journals. The dynamic team of scientists includes Pharmacists, Chemists, Botanists, Microbiologists, Pharmacologists, Medical Scientists, Veterinarians and Clinicians etc. from different departments such as Pharmacology, Formulation, Phytochemistry, Microbiology, Quality Control, Data Survey, Animal House and Experimental Farming for different research projects.

The level of sophistication and capabilities of the laboratory attained greater heights with the installation of most modern and sophisticated instruments such as:

  • CAMAG's High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) consisting of latest Linomat TLC Applicator and Scanner with WinCAT's Software.
  • WATER's Binary Gradient High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Photodiode Array Detector (PDA) - Two systems.
  • SHIMADZU's High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Refractive Index (RI) Detector.
  • Advanced Gas Chromatograph, Mass Spectrometer with Triple Quadrupole GC/MS/MS quantitation for ultra trace analysis.
  • SHIMADZU's UV-Visible Spectrophotometer.
  • PERKIN ELMER's Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) with Hydride generation assembly.
  • BIO RAD's Elisa Plate Reader.
  • High vacuum Rotary Evaporator 2 LTR.,5 LTR., 20 LTR.

Recognition of R&D Laboratory

In realisation of the achievements of our R&D Laboratory, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Government of India has granted it recognition and formal certification to our laboratory for modern scientific research on herbal products - the first of its kind in India.

Standardisation and Quality Control

"Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution."
- John Ruskin.

Relentless pursuit of this dictum has ensured the quality of our products. Quality control of Herbal Ingredients an essential factor in the assembly of any herbal product is the availability of quantitatively standardised herbal ingredients. The complex nature of the components and active ingredients mixed with helper or synergistic compounds without an active role make actual identification of the active ingredients difficult. This does not, however, preclude scientific standardisation of any particular herbal preparation.

An outline of quality control techniques employed by us is as below:

a) Identification and Authenticity of Plant Material-- All our herbal ingredients meet theQuality Control standards, set for each particular ingredient. Our scientists select the best herbal materials from chosen locations, harvest at the optimum time and ensure the correct post-harvest treatment and storage.

b) Our Quality Assurance (QA) Laboratory preserves and maintains Specimen and Database containing full information of all plant species used by Indian Herbs. Every herbal ingredient is authenticated by experts, involving both macroscopic and microscopic examination of an plant material.
