Shri Ram Lal Agarwal

In the middle of a dark, dense forest, one man saw a ray of hope. That great man, Shri Ram Lal Agrawal was inspired by the following thought published in an eminent journal on practical medicine, The Practitioner, in December, 1950..

"The lore of the countryman is built upon the experience of generations, often of centuries, and the data upon which it is based have often been obtained at a price in human lives which no modern research worker would ever dream of considering. It is particularly appropriate at the present moment, when the pharmaceutical companies of the world are emitting an unceasing flow of new synthetic drugs, that attention should be turned to the possible remedies that may be found among indigenous herbs of this and other countries."

Shri Ram Lal Agrawal was a renowned expert on identification, collection and therapeutic application of herbs. He was fascinated by the virtues of the 5000 year old Indian System of Medicine called Ayurveda, which deals with the use of herbs for the treatment of humans and animals.

Since then Indian Herbs has investigated what our ancestors did 5000 years ago, searched, researched, scientifically developed, pharmacologically tested and clinically evaluated the herbal products on modern scientific lines using the latest technology.

Indian Herbs, Saharanpur (UP) established in 1951 is the leading and pioneer company, manufacturing herbal animal health care products for ruminants, poultry, pigs, equines, pets, aqua and other animal specials for over 64 years.

According to the survey conducted by BioSpectrum and Association of Bio technology led Enterprises (ABLE), The Indian Herbs is the only company from the sector of Herbal Human and Animal Health Care products research and manufacturing in the Top 30 Biotechnology led enterprises of India, well ahead of many Parma companies. Also, according to ORG-an independent market survey organization-Indian Herbs is one of the Top 4 companies in total Animal Health Care Products market in India, successfully competing with multinational companies due to consistent quality and modern scientific research. Most of the Indian Herbs products are brand leaders in their respective therapeutic segments.

India Herbs is the first ISO 9001:2000 certificate company engaged in Research and Manufacturing of Herbal Animal Health Care product (Awarded by Det Norse Veritas, The Netherlands)

Indian Herbs is also engaged in research, development and manufacturing of unique Ayurved Specialities (Human Herbal Medicines particularly for those therapeutic segments where modern system of medicine does not provide satisfactory cures and similarly not much has been offered, so far, by alternative system of medicine. The standardized herbal extracts, developed and manufactured by Indian Herbs are being used in herbal health care formulations, nutraceuticals, cosmetics and dietary supplements etc.

Nature’s way to animal health
The theme “Nature’s Way to Animal Health “ adopted by Indian Herbs gives the true expression to company’s philosophy and symbolises its positioning in the market. The founder, a visionary of his time, envisaged the farmers themselves can use the use of herbal products that can be prescribed by Veterinarians or that, without a veterinary prescription.

The clinical trials have been conducted at farms, feed mills, breeding centers, and allied research institutions in different countries. The results of these studies are published in international journals.

Standardization and Quality Control
Quality is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, since effort, intelligent direction and skilful execution”. John Ruskin.

Relentless pursuit of this dictum has ensured the quality of our products.

Quality Control of Herbal ingredients
An essential factor in the assembly of any herbal product is the availability of quantitatively standardized herbal ingredients. The complex nature of the components and active ingredients mixed with helper or synergistic compounds without an active role make actual identification of the active ingredients difficult. This does not , however preclude scientific standardization of any particular preparation.

An outline of Quality Control Techniques employed by us is given below: -

Identification and Authenticity of Plant Material
All herbal ingredients meet the quality control standards, set for each particular ingredient. Our scientists select the best herbal materials from chosen location at right altitudes with proper soil and environmental conditions, harvest at the optimum time and ensure the correct post harvest treatment and storage.

Our Quality Assurance Laboratory preserves and maintains a specimen and Data Base containing full information on each plant material, used by INDIAN HERBS. Every herbal ingredient is authenticated by experts, involving both macroscopic and microscopic examination of each plant material,.

Quality Through Cultivation
Our R&D has developed cultivation packages for remunerative farming of herbs containing optimum quantity of desired active constituents. These methods are applied of INDIAN HERBS farms and our experts also educate and train the farmers about the cultivation of such herbs with buy-back guarantee arrangements to ensure regular availability of right quality herbal ingredients.

CHEMICAL TESTS

Besides physical tests many other parameters are used to standardize and evaluate the quality of the herbal materials.

  • Moisture

The moisture content of any herbal ingredient is important since it must be minimal for proper storage and processing,

  • Total Ether Extract.

This quantifies the terpenoids and other volatile & fixed oils in the herb.

  • Water Alcohol Soluble Extracts

Water and alcohol extractive values broadly represent the net quantitative values of the active constituents e.g. alkaloids, glycosides, flavanoids, polysaccharides, amino acids etc., in the herbal material.

  • Ash Value

This evaluates the mineral content of the sample and presence of foreign inorganic material, if any.

Standardization of Herbal Products.
Unlike synthetic drugs, the active principles in the plant are not always clearly defined and often they are a complex mixture of several closely related constituents e.g. glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, amino-acids etc.

Herbal product standardization can be achieved by finger prointing, using chromatographic techniques. Computer controlled high performance chromatographic techniques provide a complete system of qualitative and quantities evaluation of plant constituents.

The raw herb of finished product is extracted with difference organic solvents, which are applied to the HPTLC/HPLC plate in microgram quantities, and chromatogram is then developed using different solvent system, which separate the components of the sample under investigations. The chromatogram thus developed is scanned using a computer controlled viewing system that records and quantities the individual components of any mixture.

The report shows the TLC picture along with the areas of each peak. The unique spectra of any peak may be used to confirm the identity of any particular compound. Like the thumb-print of two individual can never be identical, so it is for finger print chromatogram of any plants constituent. It is this that forms the basis of standardization of herbal raw materials and poly herbal mixtures.

Quality Control of Finished Products

Finished products are subjected to strict quality control tests, which involve:

  • Physico-chemical analysis
  • HPTLC/HPLC finger printing
  • Pharmacological evaluation and clinical trials.

The chromatogram developed for each manufactured batch is compared with the standard reference chromatogram to ensure batch consistency and reproducibility for uniform results ensuing the quality of the finished product.

Good Manufacturing Practices
